Fusion of Chinese and Western Fashion.
The Evolution of the Qipao
Our Threads
Brief
The qipao (cheongsam) and Western fashion have influenced each other significantly over the past century, showcasing a blend of cultural elements. During the early 20th century, the qipao underwent a transformation under the influence of Western tailoring techniques, adopting more form-fitting silhouettes and details like high slits, zippers, and tailored waists, making it a symbol of modern Chinese femininity. Similarly, Western designers have drawn inspiration from traditional Chinese motifs, fabrics, and craftsmanship. Silk embroidery, mandarin collars, and patterns like dragons or phoenixes have frequently appeared in Western haute couture, symbolizing an appreciation for Chinese aesthetics.
This cultural exchange reflects broader globalization trends, where fashion serves as a medium for cross-cultural dialogue, blending Eastern traditions with Western modernity. The qipao’s evolution and its reinterpretation in global fashion highlight the dynamic interplay between heritage and innovation in the fashion world.

The qipao, originated from the traditional clothing of the Manchu people in the Qing Dynasty (1644–1912). Known as the “banner gown” (旗袍), it was a loose, straight-cut garment designed for practicality and modesty, primarily worn by Manchu women. Over time, as the Qing Dynasty ended and China underwent modernization in the 20th century, the qipao evolved significantly, blending traditional elements with influences from Western tailoring.
In the 1920s and 1930s, particularly in cosmopolitan cities like Shanghai, the qipao became more form-fitting, with slimmer silhouettes, high slits, and decorative details such as embroidered patterns. These changes reflected the era’s modernist ideals and the growing influence of Western fashion. The qipao transitioned from a symbol of ethnic identity to a representation of modern Chinese femininity, bridging traditional heritage and contemporary aesthetics. Today, it continues to evolve, inspiring both modern Chinese designers and international fashion.
